The coming season will be a serious challenge for the leaders of Russian basketball clubs, but it will be easier for them to work than under severe coronavirus restrictions, believes the Olympic medalist Svetlana Abrosimova .
Dynamo Kursk became the champion of Russia among women’s teams in 2022, Zenit St. Petersburg won the VTB United League for the first time. Some legionnaires left the Russian teams due to the political situation in the world.
– In Russia it worked like this – two or three strong teams with good foreigners. Everyone knew who would win prizes. And now the clubs are on an equal footing. And the championship, on the contrary, has become interesting. I spoke to my colleagues, they admit: “We started watching the matches because we don’t know what will happen.”
The next season will be difficult, unpredictable, but after the pandemic, our general managers are ready for anything. Then people were shocked and didn’t know how to work with it, what to do. It was impossible to go anywhere, matches were interrupted, people were getting sick. Now we are ready for anything. It’s a new challenge, and our professionals will face anything. It’s easier now than in a pandemic,” Abrosimova told RT.
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) previously announced that Russian and Belarusian clubs have been suspended from participating in the Women’s Euroleague, Eurocup and FIBA Europe Cup next season due to of the situation in Ukraine.
