MBA will be able to succeed in the away match against Zenit if he can maintain the rhythm and structure of his game throughout the match, the Moscow club’s general director Igor Kocharyan told .
MBA will meet Zenit in the United League championship match in St. Petersburg on October 17.
At the start of the VTB League season, Muscovites won one victory and lost three matches, Zenit recorded two victories and two defeats.
— Everyone considered MBA the favorite in the United League home match against Samara, but the guests managed to win. How would you comment on this?
– Well, it didn’t work. Maybe the guys got a little nervous. However, the weight of responsibilities was pressing: for the first home match of the season, the spectators were numerous. We started the match badly and immediately went down to -16. Then we heroically caught up with the opponent, got back into the game and took the lead. Again, the gap was 14 points, but they regained it again. It’s always harder to catch up and, of course, those two fools took a lot of strength. And in principle, it was ultimately the Samara legionnaires who took the initiative and decided the outcome of the meeting. And maybe our guys were a little lacking in leadership qualities. Someone had to take over the game and lead the team. But somewhere we didn’t have enough strength, somewhere we gave in psychologically. We failed to win, but there is a long season ahead of us, many matches, we will try to make the next matches end in our favor.
— At the start of the season, MBA won one match and suffered three defeats. Before Zenit, did this circumstance put emotional pressure on the team?
— It seems to me that there is no particular pressure now, because today it is a very balanced championship. We see it in many matches at the start of the season, where everyone can beat everyone. So, I think there’s no longer a fundamental difference who you play with. The championship shows that the league has stabilized and that all teams are worthy of it. Almost every match now features serious competition.
— In the next match, you will meet Zenit. What can you say about the opponent’s game and what do you expect from the upcoming meeting?
— Zenit is a big club, they have a good team with depth in their squad. Of course, there are probably some difficulties, but they have a sufficient number of skilled basketball players, and it seems to me that they pose a threat in all conditions. We expect a tough match and we are preparing for a fight.
— What will be the key to the IBA’s success in this meeting?
— The physical and psychological condition of our players. Because the game lasts 40 minutes and you need to maintain focus and structure to your game with quick transitions throughout this time. If we maintain this pace, I hope luck will accompany us,” Kocharian told the correspondent.
