Gimnasia y Esgrima de Comodoro Rivadavia faced Peñarol de Montevideo for all or nothing in the South American League. It was a victory for “Green Magic” as a visitor and they qualified as second in the group with two wins, one loss and the best average of +/- in points.
Peñarol (Uru) 82 – Gimnasia (CR) 83
The match was a battle in the beginning, but Gimnasia took advantage at the end of the first period and did not lose the lead for the rest of the match. They controlled all quarters but Peñarol, trailing hard, took advantage at the end of the game and hit the Comodorenses in a terrible way.
The Uruguayan team went on a 12-0 run at the end of the match and was left with only one point on the scoreboard. But “Green” did not let himself win and managed to win the match and with it, qualified for the Final 6, as the second in Group B.
The highlights of Leonardo Villagrán’s team are his American players, Gerard De Vaughn and Brandon Nazione. The center with 41 on his back was the MVP and contributed 17 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist. Meanwhile, the 29-year-old power forward had 22 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist.
In Peñarol, the standout was Isaac Sosa, the Puerto Rican guard added “Manya” with 25 points, 1 rebound and 3 assists.
Who is eligible and how is the competition going?
In Group B, Peñarol de Montevideo still stands, finishing in the top zone by advanced statistics in points. Gimnasia y Esgrima de Comodoro Rivadavia, despite having the best +/- of the four teams, was not enough to be the leader and entered the next stage of the South American League with second place.
Both Leones (Potosí and Quilpué) were left out of the competition. Club Leones de Potosí has not won any of its matches, so it has no chance. But Colegio los Leones de Quilpué had a chance to qualify, by winning their third match, they needed Peñarol to win to continue the race, an event that did not happen.
