The New Orleans pivot, which caused sensation in the NBA after being selected number 1 in the 2019 Draft, has been no longer than the courts due to ongoing injuries. The new contract changes the trust given to him.
The New Orleans Pelicans once again believed in Zion Williamson and renewed his contract for 5 years and 193 million dollars; which can amount to 231 million dollars if the player reaches certain goals.
Obviously the potential of the player seems to be higher than has been shown so far. In his first season, he averaged 22.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game but only played 24 games in total.. In his second year in the NBA, Williamson was selected for all-star and he got it 27 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists averaged per game in 61 games.
however, Williamson has not played a game in the 2021-2022 season due to foot problems and amid rumors about his being overweight and his possible departure from the Pelicans. There was even speculation about possible retirement because of how long the rehabilitation would take. His last fight was on May 4, 2021.
Zion received a contract supermax, of the maximum available franchise. He still has one year left on his contract but is now tied to the franchise until 2027-28. The base of 193 million could go to 231 if the player gets a spot on All Star Game 2023.
Aside from Williamson’s complicated situation, the franchise of New Orleans was one of the great revelations last year by qualifying for the playoffs after losing in the play-in Los Angeles Clippers.
