Former Russian women’s basketball team coach Grudin: “I believe we will shine on the world stage again and win medals”

Former head coach of the Russian women’s basketball team Igor Grudin in an interview with expressed confidence that in the future the national team will be able to win again medals in international competitions.

Grudin led the women’s national team from 1994 to 1995 and from 2004 to 2008. Under his leadership, Russian women won gold, silver and bronze at the European Championships, became second at the World Championships of 2006 and also won bronze medals at the 2008 Olympic Games.

— Do you think that the bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics will be the last in the history of Russian women’s basketball for a long time?

— Now, that’s hard to repeat. Of course, this tournament left an unpleasant aftertaste. It’s a shame, especially in front of the girls, that we didn’t do enough work, because everyone wanted to win these Olympics. I wanted to end my national team career on a different note.

But I believe that our team will shine again on the world stage and can win medals again. Unfortunately, sanctions currently prevent this. It’s good that next year the World Friendship Games will take place, where basketball will be presented. I think serious teams will come, especially since everyone will be able to participate,” Grudin told .

Grudin ended his coaching career in 2009.
