Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has renewed his contract with the Florida franchise for a historic sum. The two-time champion coach extended his tenure at the helm of the team for eight years and $120 million.
After signing, Erik became the highest paid coach in NBA history. This amount was offered to him by Pat Riley, his mentor. The 53-year-old coach, who has been linked to the Eastern Conference franchise for a quarter of a century, has risen from video analyst to position leader.
He is the coach who has been in the same position the longest without changing teams since Gregg Popovich. He is also the second most accomplished coach after a Spurs coach, and the third among active coaches after Popovic and Rick Carlisle, who are now with the San Antonio franchise.
Erik Spoelstra is in the top 20 coaches with the most games won of all time, he is one of 14 to win at least two NBA rings. Three if we assign him the one he won in 2006 as Pat’s assistant, which at the time finished his hand at five championships.
