Fridzon: “I felt like I could still play. I want to help Avtodor in the fight for the playoffs”

Six-time VTB United League champion defender Vitaly Fridzon told that he thought about it for about a month before accepting Saratov’s offer.Avtodora

Avtodor announced on Monday the signing of 38-year-old Fridzon to a contract until the end of the 2023/24 season.

— It’s nice to try your hand at Avtodor. I felt I could and wanted to continue playing and the club was very interested in me. Avtodor is a very good team. Everyone saw that in the recent match against Zenit, the Saratov team was a little lacking in achieving success. I know the team coach well, we had a great conversation. He said the team would be very happy to see me.

It is clear that recently I have been training differently, but now there will be a different regime and pace of work. Of course it takes time to adapt, but I already have everything else. And the experience is with me.

— You haven’t played in the United League for over six months. How long will you be there?

– This is a difficult question. It will be difficult until I get fit again. But little by little, everything will come.

— Can you play for 10 minutes?

– 10 minutes is enough for me. I think this time is also enough to benefit the team.

— How long ago did you start negotiations with Avtodor?

“They wanted to see me on the team for a long time.” About a month ago, maybe a little later, we talked. But I said I had to get in shape so as not to arrive in the team disassembled. I trained, now I feel like I can. An important stage of the United League championship begins – the fight for the playoffs, and I want to help Avtodor with this. I think the team will accept it normally. It’s a shame that apart from Sasha Petenev, I don’t really know anyone there. I’ve never met other guys before.

— Did you communicate with Petenev before the transition?

– Yes, I called him. He asked what and how: how the training went, how everything was going. At my age, I had to understand everything, to know everything in detail. I had to figure out if I needed more or maybe it was enough. But you see, I still want to run.

— Are you ready to play until you’re 40?

– Let’s see how I start now, at 38 years old. You can’t guess at this age. It will all depend on how the body tolerates stress and recovers,” Fridzon told .

Fridzon previously played for Khimki near Moscow, CSKA Moscow, Lokomotiv-Kuban Krasnodar and Zenit Saint Petersburg. With the Russian team, he won bronze medals at the 2012 Olympics and the 2011 European Championships.
