Boris Zavatsky went to the front as a volunteer and spent 21 months in the dungeons of the aggressor country.
Former basketball player Boris Zavatsky returns home from captivity in Russia. As Ukraine’s NOC reported, this happened during a major exchange of prisoners in early January.
Then, we remind you, through the mediation of the United Arab Emirates, our state was able to return 230 military and civilians from the prisons of the aggressor country.
Let’s remember that Zavatsky is known primarily for his performances in the Kharkov amateur basketball league, but also had successes in professional basketball. In the early 2000s, he played in the Major League for Kharkov Polytechnic, and in 1999 he was the champion of Ukraine in 3×3 basketball.
“Boris volunteered for the war in 2015 and retired at the end of 2021, but at the beginning of a mass invasion he immediately went to the military registration and enlistment office. He fought as part of the 92nd separate mechanized brigade named Koshevoy Ataman Ivan Sirko, and on March 25, 2022 in the Kharkov region near the village of Olkhovka he disappeared during a combat mission, ambushed. Then there were almost 2 years of captivity and a long-awaited return to his own land,” the NOC statement said.
His wife Yulia said that Boris was bullied in captivity: “Now, immediately after the exchange, he is eager to return to defend Ukraine.”
