basketball head coach CSKA Emile Raikovitch told that he sees forming a new squad and player progression as his priority task for the season.
CSKA announced the appointment of the 43-year-old Macedonian as head coach on June 17. Previously, he led the Saratovs “Avtodor” and “Astana”.
— What are your first impressions of the club and the team?
– Meeting with President and Vice President, staff, coaching staff. The high organization of all club processes caught my attention. European, I would say. And absolutely everyone speaks English. I haven’t met the team yet, the players are on vacation, but I’ve already spoken to almost everyone on the phone.
– What do you think is CSKA’s main objective this season?
– Of course, without the Euroleague, the season will be specific. First, you need to focus on building a new team. Second, on the progress of the players, mostly Russian. They will have to grow enough to be an important part of CSKA of the future. The team that will return to European basketball is no less strong than it was.
The next goal, of course, is to win. CSKA is a club with a history and legendary titles. It may seem odd that I haven’t put winning at the top of my list of priorities, but laying the groundwork by raising top Russians is really more important right now.
Last season, CSKA reached the final of the VTB United League, where they lost to Zenit 3-4 in the series. The club has been suspended from participating in the Euroleague next season.
