Sergei Belov was a true leader of basketball – both as a player and as a coach, the Honored Coach of Russia told Sergei Elevich.
On January 23, Belov would have turned 80 years old. One of the most successful Russian basketball players died in 2013.
— I knew Sergei Belov well and I have great respect for him. I even studied with him at the same institute, in Malakhovka, and I am proud of it. Now they erected a monument to him there, it’s very good – I liked it. Yesterday I was just there for a conference. I consider Sergei a great professional. In life, he was a little reserved, but in basketball, he knew his job very well. As a player and coach, Sergei was at a very high level. He did a lot for national basketball. Belov greatly contributed to our team’s victory at the Olympics. Nobody believed we could win, but we did. And they won largely thanks to his titanic work. He was generally a real leader. Both as a coach and as a player,” Elevich told the correspondent.
The trophy for which the participants of the VTB United League are fighting is named after Sergei Belov.
