NBA: A new era is coming to the Draft

Basketball’s premier competition has announced it will change its election night format starting in 2024

It is well known that the NBA is constantly seeking to improve every day and find new ways to generate greater impact. That is why it was not too surprising when Adrian Wojnarowski, an expert journalist for ESPN, reported that the competition decided to change Draft night. Starting in 2024, this event will be two from the same night format.

The draft will be split into the first and second rounds on consecutive nights. The first round will take place on the 26th, and the second on the 27th of June. The Barclays Center in Brooklyn will host opening day and the following day at ESPN’s Seaport District Studios. The reasons for this change coincide with the development of strategies between NBA franchises. As those involved explained, the pace of the second round generated complaints from some franchises. It is expected that, with 24 hours between one and the other, the transfers can happen in a more organized way.

“Based on feedback on the NBA draft format from league basketball executives and my own experience in draft rooms, we believe teams will benefit from regrouping between rounds and having more time to create of decisions in the second round”. These are the statements of Joe Dumars, executive vice president. The new draft format means teams will have five minutes to make their first-round picks. For their part, on the second night, they had four minutes to do it. “Two nights of primetime coverage will also enhance the viewing experience for our fans. They will even show the recruits.”
