The New Orleans team beat the San Antonio Spurs on NBA night.
Friday night brought us a new rivalry between two players picked first in the draft. Victor Wembanyama on one side and Zion Williamson on the other. The rivalry, which was very tight, ended in favor of the Pelicans, who relied on the inside to win the game with a hard fought 113 to 114.
Both teams left everything in the final minutes. Those from Texas had everything to win the game at the end of 48 minutes. With a point in favor of the scoreboard (113 to 112) they had two chances to escape with three points, forcing their rival to take a long-distance shot. First, Tre Jones had an ineffective drive toward the rim; Later, the Frenchman, with his eternal arms, made a tap-in to score near the basket, but Brandon Ingram sealed the paths with a block. From there, the Pelicans went to the other side of the court at the speed of light.
With a pirouette to escape his opponents, Zion got all the attention of the night. The play was one against three, with one being Victor Wembanyama. Even his long arms couldn’t stop the shot that put New Orleans one point ahead on the scoreboard. The San Antonios had some time left to turn history in their favor, but Devin Vassell’s pitch was ineffective, sparking a Pelicans celebration and angering the home team.
Williamson is the hero and figurehead of his team. He completed his scoresheet with 33 points and 8 rebounds. He was joined by CJ McCollum with 21 points and Jonas Valanciunas; who hit a double double with 18 points and 9 rebounds. In Texas, Wemby finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks.
