The unveiling ceremony of the statue of the five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant near the arena of the Los Angeles Lakers took place on Thursday, reports the team’s press service.
The bronze monument, which stands 5.8 meters tall and weighs approximately 1,800 kg, depicts Bryant in a victory pose after scoring 81 points against the Toronto Raptors on January 22, 2006.
The opening date – 02/08/24 – refers to the numbers under which the basketball player played (8 and 24), as well as number 2, under which his daughter Gianna played. Bryant’s widow, Vanessa, announced that two more statues would be unveiled in Kobe’s honor.
Bryant played his entire career for the Lakers, winning the championship five times with the team. He has also won Olympic gold twice and won the 2018 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. In January 2020, a 41-year-old basketball player, his daughter and seven others died in a helicopter crash.
