Former basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Russian national team Timofey Mozgov told that the public understands what kind of country Russian athletes playing in neutral status represent.
Russian athletes in most sports, including basketball, have been suspended from international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine. Basketball players from the Russian national team have been organizing a training camp in Novogorsk since February 17.
— How do you think young basketball players can find motivation now without international tournaments?
– If you have to defend the colors of the national team during competitions, then you have to be ready for it, that’s for sure. The situation is, to say the least, atypical, but it is the same in other sports. This is even partly a deception, because many athletes compete under a neutral flag, even though everyone understands which country they represent. Only politicians say that sport is outside politics. We have to work, especially if they call us to a training camp, because no one knows what will happen tomorrow,” Mozgov told .
