The NBA star stated that, once he retires from basketball, he is interested in devoting part of his life to politics.
Year 2024. Stephen Curry is 36 and NBA fans are starting to go through the process of thinking how many more years we will see the “chef” in the most important competition in the world.. Whatever time he has left on the field of play (we hope it’s still a lot) the same player shared some of his thoughts on when, eventually, his career will come to an end. He could have easily devoted himself to golf, another one of those sports where he’s managed to occasionally shine, or stay involved with basketball as a coach or staff of a franchise… but no. “I’m interested in using every part of my influence to do good, as much as I can, and if that’s the way to do it… I wouldn’t say the presidency, but politics…”
Basketball (especially the NBA) has been associated with political issues throughout its history. Over the years the players have become great activists, using their influence to bring fans closer to the country’s decisions. From voting campaigns, or appearing in marches related to people’s rights, or simply raising their voice when they witness some injustice.. Curry has on many occasions been clear about his political positions, showing his displeasure with Donald Trump, or stating that he received an offer from Joe Biden as a sports advisor. In that context, it is not crazy to think of the player as a leader, as he is on the field.
This is clearly not a short-term plan. The United States will have elections in 2024 and 2028, and both are unreal for a Steph who remains in enviable NBA form. But we can’t deny that the idea of seeing him wield his influence on one of the most important stages in the world is something that powerfully grabs our attention. As for what’s to come in the short term, Curry is almost a “sung vote.” The elections in the United States seem to be heading for Trump again against Joe Biden. The words of the perimeter guard were quite clear in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine earlier: “Most of his rhetoric, before he became president, during his four years and until now, if he tries again, has a divisive tone that should have no place in our country. No matter how serious and powerful the threat, to him or anyone else. If not running for president, there should be similar urgency and necessary noise on the other side.
