Beyoncé, Houston Rockets and the rescue of black country

In an exclusive interview with Athletistic, communicator Mavi, from ‘NBA das Mina’, analyzes the impact of Beyoncé’s new release, the album ‘Cowboy Carter’

In 2024, Beyonce continues to make its specialty in American and world culture: surprising and causing upheavals. The singer announced the second act of a trilogy of albums she has been building, the country project ‘Cowboy Carter’. The collection promises to rescue the black presence (and origin) in the musical genre.

The change in style, however, only comes to those who don’t know Beyoncé’s roots, who is from Texas, daughter of Mathew Knowlesfrom Alabama, and from Tina Knowles, whose family comes from the State of Louisiana. The owner of the hits “Single Ladies”, “Formation” and “TEXAS HOLD’ EM” is even a big fan of the franchise. NBA from his hometown, the Houston Rockets.

In partnership with the page “Brotherly Culture”the portal and podcast “NBA das Minas” (the first Brazilian focused on basketball and made up only of women) analyzed how the impact of Beyoncé’s new album could reverberate deeply in the musical and sporting spheres. Mavi Lopessocial media and one of the administrators, highlighted exclusively to Athletistic that the singer’s artistic intention is to occupy spaces that have been taken over.

“Beyoncé says she likes to do exactly what they say she can’t do.”explained the communicator. “She’s going to release the country album now, but since she was a kid in Houston she’s experienced this rodeo culture, she’s already sung at openings. When she wrote a song for the ‘Lemonade’ album (‘Daddy Lessons’) and performed it on Country Music Awards 2016 she felt that they clearly did not accept her well.”

The performance in question was the only one not included on the awards website in the year mentioned. Thus, the desire and ambition to develop an album that celebrated black country culture emerged. Mavi stated that it is possible to establish a parallel of affirmation between the representation of black people in the NBA and in music on its various fronts.

“Nowadays, they (black players) are the majority, but the league had to develop a lot to get to this point. In the 2000s, with the Allen Iverson, there was a lot of prejudice against his hip-hop style, they even banned his way of dressing. And that has a lot to do with music. When they want to ban a style, it affects basketball and the musical style, considered criminal.”he pointed out.

“So when they claim that, ‘yes, there will be black people in the league, it will have a hip-hop style’, I think it has a lot to do with what Beyoncé does in music”. The 42-year-old artist does not intend to face South American conservatives just through art, as she even considered the possibility of partially buying the Houston Rockets, whose owner is linked to right-wing politics in Texas and the United States.

“There are a lot of people who think that since she would be a minority partner, there wouldn’t be that much of an impact. But when Jay-Z was a member of the Brooklyn Nets he changed a lot of things visually, he chose the songs, he changed the jersey, in short, he managed to have a big impact on this team”mentioned Mavi in relation to the rapper, businessman and husband of the Texan.

“I think that Beyoncé, just being one of the partners, would generate a big impact. And I think she would definitely bring this black culture and claim of ‘we are also from Texas, we are also from country’. There’s a new star on the Rockets, who is the Jalen Green, and she made a point of calling him for her campaigns with Adidas (Ivy Park). I think, subtly, she’s always saying, ‘This is where we belong.’

‘Cowboy Carter’, released this Friday, 29th, is the sequel to ‘Renaissance’, which had influences from Casa, Lar and culture ballroom. The theory of music critics and Beyoncé fans is that the trilogy is inspired by musical styles of black origin in the United States and which, over time, had their protagonism appropriated by white people. Thus, ‘Bey’ is expected to close the trilogy with rock in the third act.
