US Congressman Colin Allred said US authorities had made a “very good offer” to Russia regarding the exchange of an American basketball player. Britney Greiner suspected of drug trafficking.
– The ball is completely on the side of the Russian field. I think the outlook, in my opinion, is now better than ever since she was taken into custody, Allred said, as quoted by TMZ.
In his opinion, the athlete will be sentenced before Russia accepts the exchange options.
Earlier, US media reported, citing a source in US President Joe Biden’s administration, that he supported plans to swap Russian Viktor Bout, who is serving a prison sentence in the US, for American citizens Greiner and Paul Whelan, who was sentenced in Russia to 16 years in prison for espionage.
On Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the head of the department Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, at the initiative of the US side, had a telephone conversation and discussed, among other things, the exchange of prisoners, including Greiner.
Greiner was arrested on suspicion of attempting to illegally import hash oil through Sheremetyevo airport in February, and a criminal case was opened for drug trafficking. Greiner faces a prison term of 5 to 10 years. The trial is ongoing, the next meeting is scheduled for August 2. Greiner, 31, has been playing for UMMC Yekaterinburg since 2015, winning the Olympics twice as part of Team USA (2016, 2020).
