Bill Walton, two-time NBA champion and member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, died Monday at the age of 71 after a long battle with cancer, the NBA press service reported.
“Bill Walton was one of a kind. As a Hall of Famer, he redefined the center position. He was a regular presence at league events – always cheerful, smiling from ear to ear and ready to share his wisdom and warmth.
I cherished our close friendship, envied his boundless energy and admired the way he paid attention to every person he met,” said league commissioner Adam Silver.
Walton won championships with the Portland Trail Blazers (1977) and Boston Celtics (1986) and was named MVP of the 1977 NBA Finals. In 1993, Walton was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Wilton’s son, Luke, is a two-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers.
