President of the basketball club CSKA Andrei Vatutin on he explained why, on the eve of the start of the VTB United League playoffs, it was decided to appoint Andreas Pistiolis as head coach instead Emile Raikovitch .
On Wednesday, CSKA defeated UNICS from Kazan on the road in the fifth game of the final with a score of 66:55 and won the series – 4-1. The Moscow club won the tournament for the 11th time in its history.
— CSKA’s victory was associated with a very bold managerial decision: changing the head coach on the eve of the playoffs. Was there a specific moment that led to this? Or was it all piling up?
“This decision was preceded by a serious analysis which did not last a week or a month, but much longer. At some point, the situation began to develop differently than we would like. We talked about this a lot with Emil Raikovich, but it became clear that we were at an impasse. This decision is not at all spontaneous, but forced.
I am very happy that the arrival of a new coach has made it possible to shake up the team and radically change the training and playing process. We took a lot of risks; As a rule, coaches do not change on the eve of the playoffs. But everything happened like that. Of course, we can now say that we guessed correctly and got it, but I repeat, it’s not magic. First of all, it is the hard work of the new coaching team and the players themselves. I would like to once again thank Emil Raikovich for the work he did before his resignation. It so happened that we found ourselves in a creative impasse and had to make these changes, ”Vatoutine said on the air of the show “Everyone for the match!
Pistiolis took over as CSKA manager in mid-April at the end of the VTB United League regular season, replacing Raikovich. In May, CSKA announced the extension of the contract with Pistiolis. The agreement will be valid until the end of the 2025/26 season.
