The basketball championship of Ukraine will be held on the territory of our country. About this, in an interview with the FBU press service, the president of the organization, Mikhail Brodsky, said. At the same time, he spoke about difficult times for Ukrainian basketball. According to the functionary, not everyone can gather to participate in the championship.
“We are starting to work with clubs that, under these conditions, can play in the Ukrainian championship. It is not sweet for everyone now, obviously, but we will definitely hold the Ukrainian championship. We will have two championship – Division A- The Superleague and Division B, in men’s and women’s.We used to have three championships – now there will be two.
We considered several formats. There was an idea to start everything in one league, and in the second part to divide into divisions, but we decided that it would be better to divide the season into two leagues according to the abilities of the clubs. We will play without fans, but with the obligatory online and TV broadcast and appropriate media support.
Games will be played in safe areas with available cover. The tours will be held in a kind of bubbles that we have already experienced under quarantine, that is, the clubs will gather in one place where they will hold a series of matches, each tour will be held once every two week. I think there will be about 8-10 teams in each league, we will start at the end of October.
I would like to note that clubs that will play abroad must also play in the Ukrainian championship. Otherwise, it is not a Ukrainian club. Competition rules are currently being developed. All of them will be coordinated with the championship clubs and the FBU executive committee.
If we talk about men’s clubs, then, apart from Prometheus and Budivelnik, the teams do not have powerful sponsors or owners. I will help Cherkassy Mavpas little by little, we have a sponsorship fist in Kyiv-Basket, we have an ambitious Dnipro, we hope in Rivne, Volyn and Zhytomyr with some other teams, we have strong activists in Zaporozhye and Yuzhny – Division A is approaching a place like this now – Superleague, maybe 10 teams. Unfortunately, Ternopil will be out of the season. The remaining clubs will play in Division B.
The situation is a bit worse in the women’s championship. I can tell in advance that there will be fewer teams. We would like to have two leagues with 8 teams, but if there are less, we will combine the women’s league into one division. The format of the competition is identical to the men’s league,” said Brodsky.
