PBC CSKA confirmed to go to court over Euroleague withdrawal

Moscow CSKA Andrey Vatutin confirmed the information about the army club’s appeal to the Luxembourg court regarding the team’s withdrawal from participation in the Euroleague in basketball next season.

In March 2022 Euroleague announced that CSKA, Zenit Saint Petersburg and UNICS Kazan were excluded from the current tournament draw due to the situation in Ukraine, their results were voided.

– CSKA has effectively appealed to the Luxembourg court, where the company ECA, which manages the Euroleague, is registered. We contest the decision of its board of directors to withdraw our club from the tournament, despite being a shareholder and holder of an A license.

We believe that the decision was made without the required legal grounds. We have no illusions about the hypothetical participation in the next Euroleague season, if only because the court’s decision will have to wait a long time. It is important for us to obtain a legal assessment, whatever it is. Moreover, the Euroleague is a commercial tournament, non-participation in it deprives us of a significant part of our income. In fact, we were deprived of the opportunity to receive income from the business, in the creation and management of which we were directly involved,” Vatutin told reporters.

CSKA has a long-term A license, the club is a member of the Euroleague shareholder council.
