Kazan UNICS forward Mikhail Belenitsky said in an interview with that after the third operation on the cruciate ligament in his knee he was considering ending his career early.
Belenitsky became a silver medalist of the VTB United League last season as part of UNICS. The 21-year-old joined the club from Kazan in the spring from PARIS NN. The basketball player has been playing for the Nizhny Novgorod team since 2019.
— What kind of injury history did you have?
— Three injuries in a row. In the first season (in Nizhny Novgorod) he tore the crosses on his left leg, and the next season – on his right. And then there was a complete rupture of the cruciate ligament in my right leg.
— Such injuries at such a young age… What did you think then?
– It was very difficult. After the first injury, it was probably the hardest. Because when you come to such a team at 16, you want to show that they brought you here for a reason, that you are ready to gnaw on the floor, and suddenly an injury… A very difficult moment. But Zoran [Лукич] he called before the operation and told me that everything would be fine, that he believed in me and that he was waiting. It was very encouraging, somehow my soul immediately felt lighter.
The operation went normally, six months of convalescence, I’m slowly getting back on track… But then again I got injured in a game and had another operation. It was very difficult mentally to relive all that. And you already start thinking about what you need to do other than basketball if your career suddenly stops: go back to school, for example.
When the third injury happened, which prevented me from playing basketball for a year, I began to think about it more and more. So, on the contrary, it would be somehow easier for me. Thank God, everything went well. However, I studied at the University of Nizhny Novgorod. On July 25, I will go to enroll in a master’s program,” Belenitsky told .
