American basketball player receives warning from USADA for using acne product

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has issued an official warning to 23-year-old basketball player Nalissa Smith, who was denied authorization to use a banned drug for therapeutic purposes.

The athlete tested positive for doping on June 2, 2024. She managed to avoid disqualification because the tests took place out of competition.

“Smith’s violation resulted from her use of spironolactone, an oral prescription acne medication that she took under the supervision of a physician for a diagnosed medical condition,” USADA said in the statement.

It is worth noting that Smith has already issued a therapeutic exemption for the drug. Spironolactone is used to treat edema in heart failure, liver cirrhosis and kidney disease.

In June, another American athlete, 17-year-old weightlifter Ella Nicholson, received an official warning for using the same drug. She also failed to obtain prior approval to use an acne product that contained a banned substance.
