Russian national basketball team could compete to reach Olympic playoffs, UNICS forward Belenitsky says

The Russian men’s basketball team could qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris and compete to reach the playoffs of the tournament, the Kazan forward told . UNICS Mikhail Belenitsky .

In February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that sports federations not allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in international tournaments. Later, the recommendations were softened; IOC President Thomas Bach said that the organization would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who had passed the selection process to participate in the Summer Games in individual and neutral status. Athletes will be able to perform in Paris without a flag, anthem, and other national symbols. At the same time, the issue of Russians and Belarusians participating in the Olympic Games with a neutral status in team events was not considered.

— How would the Russian team perform at the Paris Games if it participated?

“Our team now has a strong backbone. The team has players who have experience in the Euroleague and other European Cup tournaments. They know how to play in major competitions. So I think our team will definitely be able to qualify for these Games. It seems to me that we would have a chance to play in the playoffs.

— So we would have left the group?

“It’s hard to talk when all that is missing.” But, in my opinion, there are chances in this fight. Especially with a coach like Zoran [Лукич]who knows how to put together a team,” Belenitsky told .

The Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
