The women’s NBA game started with a rally in support of Greiner, sentenced in Russia

Rally in support of convicted basketball player in Russia Britney Griner took place before the Women’s NBA (WNBA) regular season game between the Connecticut Sun and the Phoenix Mercury.

Players from both teams stood in a ring in the center of the field and remained silent for 42 seconds, symbolizing the number under which Greiner played for the Mercury. Fans and coaches also got in on the action. Some viewers chanted BG (Greiner’s initials) and “Bring her home”. The game ended with a score of 77:64 in favor of Connecticut.

“Brittney’s strength inspires us every day, and we are determined to keep this topic in the spotlight until she returns safely to American soil. The main goal is to bring Brittney and other Americans back illegally held in their homes. This is a moment of compassion and shared understanding that reaching a deal to bring Americans home will be difficult but fair,” the WNBA said in a statement.

Greiner was sentenced by the Khimki City Court on Thursday to 9 years in a penal colony and a fine of 1 million rubles in a drug trafficking case. The 31-year-old basketball player was arrested in February while trying to smuggle hash oil through Sheremetyevo airport.

Greiner is the 2014 WNBA champion with the Mercury, two-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion.
