Organizers mixed up South Sudan’s anthem before the team’s first basketball game at the Paris Olympics against Puerto Rico.
After the team presentation, the organizers played the Sudanese anthem and fans attending the match began waving flags and shouting until the organizers stopped the music.
The Puerto Rico basketball team expressed its solidarity with the South Sudanese team by applauding with the spectators. The organizers of the game apologized for the mistake.
South Sudan’s sovereign status came into effect on 9 July 2011 following the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The team’s rivals in the Olympic basketball tournament are also the USA and Serbia.
The Paris Olympics will end in 2011.
