“Gazzaev is an iconic figure of Soviet and Russian football. It is hard to imagine that he is 70 years old.” – Vatutin

CSKA basketball club president Andrei Vatutin, in a conversation with , was named Honored Coach of Russia Valeria Gazzaeva an iconic figure of Soviet and Russian football.

Gazzaev turned 70 on Wednesday.

— I was lucky to see Gazzaev in the role of not only one of the most successful and decorated Russian football coaches. When I was little, my father took me to watch football, so I remember Gazzaev well and also being a wonderful player. I was probably about 10 years old at that time. Gazzaev was a very bright footballer with impressive dribbling, energy and explosive speed. And after so many years, I remember very well how he played.

Of course, I am very happy that he has achieved great success as a footballer and coach. All his victories with CSKA in Russia, in the UEFA Cup, will not be forgotten. Of course, he is an iconic figure of Soviet and Russian football. I have great respect for Valery Georgievich. It is hard to imagine that Gazzaev is already 70 years old.

I remember that once it was my birthday, and he congratulated me in the pages of the press. And now I have a great opportunity to make Alaverdi and congratulate Valery Georgievich, to wish him all possible success, health, maximum demand and, most importantly, to remain as energetic,” Vatutin told .

Gazzaev, as a footballer, played for Spartak Ordzhonikidze (now Vladikavkaz Alania), SKA (Rostov-on-Don), Lokomotiv and Dynamo Moscow, as well as Dynamo Tbilisi. With the “blue and white” he won the USSR Cup in 1984. As a member of the USSR national team, Gazzaev twice won the European Youth Championship and became a bronze medalist at the Moscow Olympic Games. During his career, the striker scored more than 100 goals.

The first club in Gazzaev’s coaching career was Ordzhonikidze’s Spartak. Then came Dynamo Moscow, Alania (twice), CSKA, Dynamo kyiv, as well as Russian youth and main teams.

In 1995, Gazzaev led Alania to the first victory in the Russian championship in the club’s history. With CSKA, the specialist won the national championship three times, the Russian Cup four times, the Russian Super Cup twice, and also won the UEFA Cup in 2005. With Dynamo kyiv, Gazzaev won the Ukrainian Super Cup.
