Bohdan Bliznyuk to resume career in Lithuanian Jonava

The Ukrainian began his career in the United States, then was an important player in Budivelnyk and the Ukrainian national team, but spent the previous season on the sidelines

Ukrainian forward Bogdan Bliznyuk returns to big basketball. The 29-year-old player, who missed last season, signed a contract with the Lithuanian Jonava.

The coach of the Lithuanian club, Mantas Šernius, who previously worked as an assistant to Ronen Ginzburg on the Prometey coaching staff, commented on the signing of the Ukrainian newcomer:

“Bohdan Bliznyuk is a player who played for the Ukrainian national team. He can play in several positions, he is very strong in defense. Bohdan also has advantages that are not reflected in the statistics – he is a very combative player, and such qualities determine the desire of the whole team to win.”

Bliznyuk was born in Lutsk and lived in the United States from the age of seven. Bohdan left a noticeable mark on the NCAA student championship, playing for the Eastern Washington University team (2014-2018). He dreamed of trying his hand at the NBA, was called up to the 2018 Summer League games as part of the Los Angeles Clippers, but was never able to step up to the elite level.

Bohdan began his professional career in Israel’s Bnei Herzliya. Returning to Ukraine, he played for Kyiv-Basket in 2019 and for Budivelnyk in 2021. He was actively involved in games for the Ukrainian national team. Bliznyuk’s last club was French Cholet in the second half of the 2022/23 season.

Jonava finished seventh in the regular Lithuanian championship last season, after which they lost to Rytas in two matches in the quarterfinals.
