The Russian Basketball Federation (RBF) will review the format of the Fonbet Friendship Cup tournament after Parma’s match against the Colombian national team, Federation President Andrei Kirilenko told .
Earlier, the Colombian Basketball Federation (FCB) announced that it had not sent the national team to participate in the Friendship Cup, which is taking place in Perm. In the opening match of the tournament, the Colombian team lost to Parma with a score of 53:155. The RBF noted in the statement that the match was organized “in full compliance with official documents and confirmations” and that all communications with the FCB were carried out through official channels.
“We would like to emphasize that all our interactions with the Colombian national team have taken place exclusively through official communication channels. At the time of sending the team, all contacts were established with the legitimate president of the federation, which is confirmed by the relevant documents and information available on the official FIBA website.
We strictly do not use any unofficial public pages, links or additional channels for interaction. Our position remains unchanged: all communication and coordination is done only through verified and official sources.
After the first match, we understand that the current level of the Colombian national team is lagging behind what was expected, which causes some disappointment for all of us. As a result, we have already revised the schedule and format of the tournament to ensure a more balanced and competitive competition. Such situations, although rare, can arise in sport and we are taking quick action to resolve them.
For example, in February 2018, a qualifying match for the 2019 European Women’s Basketball Championship took place in Perm, where the Russian women’s team met the Albanian women’s team. The final score of the match – 148:35 in favor of Russia – underlines the significant gap between the teams. Let us also recall that in November 2017, in an away match, the result was similar – 122:37. These examples show that disparities within teams occur in sports and we are actively working to minimize such situations in the future.
