NBA to retire 11-time champion Bill Russell’s jersey number

Russell died July 31 at the age of 89. He will become the first basketball player in NBA history to have his jersey number retired league-wide. At the same time, active basketball players who play under the sixth number will be able to continue using it until the end of their career. In North American leagues, only two player numbers have been completely retired. In the National Hockey League (NHL), the 99th game number of Canadian Wayne Gretzky was released, and in the Major League Baseball (MLB) – the 42nd game number of American Jackie Robinson.

Russell played for Boston from 1956 to 1969. During that time, he became champion 11 times, which is a record. The basketball player entered the floor under the sixth number. He was a five-time regular season MVP and was inducted into the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Hall of Fame and the Basketball Hall of Fame.
