Dikembe Mutombo, a former basketball player for several NBA clubs, died at the age of 59 from brain cancer, reports the league’s press service.
“On the court, he was one of the greatest blockers and defensive players in NBA history. He put his heart and soul into helping others on the field.
“On behalf of the NBA family, I extend my deepest condolences to his wife Dikembe Rose, their children, his many friends and the entire basketball community whom he truly loved and who loved him in return ” said league commissioner Adam Silver.
Originally from Kinshasa, Mutombo played 18 seasons in the NBA (from 1991 to 2009). The center played in the NBA All-Star Game eight times, received the Defensive Player of the Season award four times, and was included in the All-Star team three times.
Mutombo played for Denver, Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, New York and the Nets. In 2015, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
