The famous former basketball player from Denver, Atlanta, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York and Houston could not beat cancer.
One of the best defensive centers in basketball history, Dikembe Mutombo, has passed away. The former NBA star died at the age of 58.
According to the official website of the National Basketball Association, the Congolese basketball player did not overcome brain cancer.
“Dikembe Mutombo was larger than life. On the court, he was one of the most outstanding blockers and defenders in NBA history. Off the court, he poured his heart and soul into helping others. There is no better fit than with Dikembe becoming the first global NBA Ambassador, he is a humanitarian at his core and loves the positive impact the game of basketball has on communities, especially in his native Democratic Republic of Congo and across the African continent.
I traveled the world with Dikembe and saw firsthand how his generosity and compassion inspired people. For years, he was always available at NBA events – his infectious smile, booming deep voice and signature finger wag endeared him to basketball fans of all generations,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
