The legendary basketball player became the first ex-Raptors player to receive this honor.
Toronto Raptors officially retired number 15, which belonged to the team legend Vince Carter.
A ceremony with Carter’s symbolic jersey being raised to the rafters of the Raptors’ home arena took place in Toronto. The 47-year-old ex-basketball player himself walked to the center of the court to a standing ovation from the public and could not contain his emotions. Raptors President Masai Ujiri, addressing fans, called Vince “the man who taught us to fly.”
Carter became the first player in Raptors history to have his number retired.
Vince is an NBA legend. He spent the first six years of his career in Toronto (1998 – 2004), and then played for another 16 years for various teams: New Jersey, Orlando, Phoenix, Dallas, Memphis, Sacramento and Atlanta. In 2019, there were rumors about the possible return of the 42-year-old basketball player to Toronto, but this never happened.
By retiring in the summer of 2020, Carter became the only player in NBA history to play in four different decades (similar to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in football). Vince was recently inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame on October 13th.
Toronto did not start this season very well: five defeats in seven meetings, intermediate 12th place in the Eastern Conference.
