“Bronze sometimes costs more effort than silver” – Sychkov, Spartakiad winner

Egor Sychkov, striker of the Krasnodar Territory national team, after defeating the Republic of Bashkortostan (80:77) in the match for 3rd place at the All-Russian Spartakiad, told about his special motivation. The 20-year-old basketball player also explained why he supported his team so strongly while on the bench.

– We played against guys who are almost twice the age. I’m kidding, of course, but some opponents are 30, some are 35. I really wanted to show character. Somewhere to run away, use skills. Yes, and give everything for the medal. As the coach told us in the center circle after the game: “Third place is won, and defeat leads to second place.” Thus, bronze sometimes costs even more effort than silver.

– You scored an important shot at the end, but you also invited your partners very strongly from the bench. Doesn’t the coach arrive to do his job?

– I deliberately sit at the end of the bench and try to tell my teammates. I know myself, when you run the whole game, especially with a heavy, older opponent, it’s hard to keep your focus all the time. And some of my tips sometimes help guys. How we act on the screens, what we play in attack… In general, I try to help the team with everything I can. Not only on the field, but also on the bench.

The Summer Spartakiad will last until October 2. Competitions are held in 39 sports in 12 regions of the country.
