Rookie basketball “Zenith” Joe Thomasson explained why he decided to join the St. Petersburg team.
Last year, Tomasson played for Spanish side Manresa, with whom he reached the Champions League final. Previously, he also played for Zelena Guru from Poland who played in the VTB United League.
– Before joining Zenit, you already managed to play in the United League. What do you think of the level of Russian basketball?
– Yes, I played in Russia (i.e. the VTB League – Editor’s note) even before moving to Zenit, but I played for a short time. It was in the 2019/20 season. Unfortunately, the season was not completed due to the coronavirus. Therefore, I don’t have a lot of experience playing in Russia, but I already understood that it’s a league with top teams. We played against Zenit, against CSKA. Yes, the season has been suspended, but I’m happy to have had the chance to play here.
— Have you had any other offers from other clubs in Russia this summer?
– Only Zenith. There were other clubs with whom I had a dialogue, but Zenit seemed to me the best option. I wanted to be in a big team and seriously fight for the championship. It’s important for me to play with a great coach and be part of a great system. This is what I have focused on all my career, – quotes the words of Thomasson “Sport Day by Day”.
The defenseman started his career in the NCAA student league. In Europe, he played for Dynamo Bucharest, several Polish clubs, including Zelena Guru and Israeli Hapoel (Gilboa).
