Vice-President of the Turkish Basketball Federation: If we are not given surveillance footage, we will leave EuroBasket

Match between Georgia and Turkey at EuroBasket 2022 in Tbilisi ended in a big scandal

Vice President of the Turkish Basketball Federation Omer Onan at the end of the match EuroBasket 2022 against Georgia (83:88 OT) stated that the national team would leave the tournament if they were not given records from under the stands.

“When Furkan Korkmaz was walking in the corridor to the locker room with our coach, the Georgian players, who did not take part in the match, attacked him along with Duda Sanadze and the police. You can’t attack a player who goes to the dressing room.”

“At the end of the match, there were about 30 cops pushing us into a fight. We got into a fight with the Georgian police. I appeal to FIBA, let no one deceive themselves and think that we are fools. They will provide us with all the camera recordings from the corridor every minute. If these records do not reach us, we will leave this tournament.”

“At the end of the match, the police were standing in front of our dressing room. They seemed to protect us, but they pushed us all the time. We were going to punch each other,” Onan said.

Assistant coach of the Turkish national team Hakan Demir said at the post-match press conference that some players of the Georgian national team and representatives of the organizers of the championship from the Georgian side attacked the Turks in the locker room and in the premises under the stands.

During the match in Tbilisi, the referees removed the head coach of the Turkish national team Ergin Ataman, the forward of the Turkish team Furkan Korkmaz and the defender of the Georgian national team Dudu Sanadze.

Recall that the Ukrainian national team won two opening matches of the group stage of the European Championship 2022. The Ukrainians defeated Great Britain (90:61) and Estonia (74:73).
