The Slovenian men’s basketball team arrived in Berlin for the 1/8 final match of the European Championship qualifiers with the Belgian team about 10 hours later than planned, reports CartNews .
Earlier, the Slovenian national team had to take a taxi to arrive for their first EuroBasket 2022 group stage match in Cologne against Lithuania because the assigned team bus had not arrived.
Now that the playoff teams are in Berlin, the Slovenians have another incident.
The difficulties began even before arriving in Berlin. The organizers scheduled a charter flight for the Slovenian national team at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, but the team management chose to rest and declined this option.
Instead, the Slovenian team hoped to take the high-speed train to the German capital at 3 p.m. However, the train control system at Cologne Central Station was out of order due to heavy rain the previous day and trains could not arrive at the station.
As a result, Slovenia flew from Cologne to Berlin and arrived around 8 p.m., but the problems didn’t end there. When the team was supposed to practice on Friday, there was another misunderstanding at the base. During the tournament, each team is assigned an attaché who guides the team through the various tournament facilities and helps players and coaching staff get around the city. However, the Slovenian attache didn’t know where the training center changing rooms were, or at least didn’t accompany the team there. The players had to change outside while watching the France team train.
On Saturday, Slovenia plays with Belgium in the 1/8 final. The match started at 3:45 p.m. Moscow time.
Slovenia are reigning European champions, having won the EuroBasket in 2017.
