FIBA withdrew from Ukraine the right to host EuroBasket-2025 in favor of Poland

We lost the right to play in the group stage matches of the European Championship after three years.

In March 2022, FIBA announced that Latvia, Cyprus and Finland will be the host countries of the EuroBasket 2025 group stage. The confirmation of the fourth country was delayed due to the Russian military invasion of Ukraine.

The fact is that our country is the main contender for hosting the matches of the fourth group of the tournament. But a few weeks after the start of the war, the leaders of the European Federation decided to give themselves and Ukraine some time “until November” to make a final decision.

However, according to the Polish edition of Superbasket, mentioned by BasketNews, at a meeting of the Board of FIBAEurope it was decided to give the right to host the group stage to Poland. The decision has been made, but it must be formally approved at the meeting.

All hosts automatically get a chance to participate in the final tournament, but under the current system, they will still participate in qualifiers. This means that their results are included in the table and can affect the situation of other teams.

After failing in the first qualifying round of the 2023 World Cup, which ended in July, Poland started the EuroBasket 2025 qualifying round from the opening stage. And on top of that, they also lost the first game at home to Croatia.

However, since they are co-organizers, the results of the next FIBA matches in November and February are no longer important.

Poland hosted the entire EuroBasket in 2009. In 2015, a division among four co-organizers was introduced.
