Prometheus refuses to participate in the new season of the championship of Ukraine due to the requirements of the FBU
Defender of the national team of Ukraine and Prometheus Ilya Sidorov spoke about the decision of the club not to participate in Super League 2022/23 due to demand from Basketball Federation of Ukraine pay an application fee for the championship in the amount of 4.5 million hryvnia.
The Federation previously motivated a similar amount by the participation of Prometheus in the European Cup tournament “not under the auspices of FIBA” – the Eurocup. This tournament is held under the auspices of EuroLeague Basketball.
“A few words about the current situation. First of all, I want to say that playing for the Ukrainian national team is always my priority and Prometheus’s priority. Signing a contract with the club three years ago, there was an emphasis on the fact that they want to see me not only as a Prometheus player, but also for the national team. At each game of the national team, there are more than four Prometheus players in the team. I don’t understand why, at a time when we need to join forces, situations that are incomprehensible to anyone occur, ”Sidorov wrote on Instagram.
“When Prometheus announced his return, a lot of people wrote to me with words of support and joy that the Ukrainian club will be represented at the highest level of European basketball, and it seems to me that the conditional Barcelona or Real Madrid do not really spoil the image of Spanish basketball, playing in Euroleague.
“The reason for this choice has already been said more than once – playing 18 guaranteed games instead of six is a big difference. At the end of this story, 12 young guys will suffer, who were given the opportunity to train and play in the best conditions in Ukraine, instead of looking for work during martial law in the country. I urge you to accept equal conditions for all clubs of the Ukrainian Superleague, let’s work together for the success of Ukrainian basketball and Ukraine.”
In the new season, Prometheus will play in the Eurocup group stage and in the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League. The new season in the Ukrainian Super League starts in October.
