The French Basketball Federation (BBFF) could exclude a newcomer “Zenith” Thomas Ertel of the national team for participation in the 2024 Olympics, if the defender plays for the St. Petersburg basketball club, according to a press release from the organization.
On Wednesday, Zenit announced the signing of a contract with the 33-year-old Frenchman under the 1+1 scheme.
– The basketball player signed a declaration at the start of the French team’s camp at the end of July, indicating that he did not plan to sign a contract with a Russian or Belarusian club. If Ertel plays at Zenit, this obligation will not be respected and the leader will no longer qualify for the next international competition, including the Olympic Games, the statement said.
Ertel is a silver medalist at the Tokyo Games, a bronze medalist at the 2014 World Championships and a 2013 European champion. He previously played for Turkish “Anadolu Efes”, Spanish “Barcelona” and “Real”, French ASVEL.
The 2024 Olympics will take place in Paris. Next year, the world championships are scheduled for Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines.
