Phoenix NBA owner puts him up for sale after suspension

American businessman Robert Sarver has said he plans to sell the club to the National Basketball Association (NBA)Phoenix Suns and the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury team after the league suspended him for a year for inappropriate behavior.

“Words that I deeply regret now overshadow nearly two decades of building organizations that bring people together. As a believer I believe in redemption and the path of forgiveness… But in the current circumstances it has become painfully clear that this is no longer possible – all the good that I have done or could still do will be offset by what I have said in the past. For these reasons, I am beginning to look for buyers for the Suns and Mercury,” Sarver said in a statement posted on the NBA’s website.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver backed the businessman’s decision, calling it “the next step for the organization and the community.”

Earlier in September, the NBA suspended Sarver for a year and fined him $10 million following an ongoing investigation since November last year. The investigation revealed incidents of racism, employee abuse, inappropriate comments related to gender or sexual orientation and disrespectful remarks towards staff.

Sarver acquired both clubs in 2004.
