BBC's Match of the Day returned for the 2026-27 Premier League season with its traditional format intact, as host Mark Chapman joked about unity among the punditry team just days after reports of a rift involving Alan Shearer emerged.
The programme opened as it always does, with archive footage, old voices and old logos, including commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme's line from August 1964: "Welcome to Match of the Day."
Mail journalist Kieran Gill, reviewing the broadcast, said he would launch a petition of his own if the BBC ever dropped that opening montage and theme tune.
Chapman then greeted viewers from the presenter's chair with a tongue-in-cheek line referencing the speculation around the show: "Happy new season. Match of the Day returns. We're all smiles here. Just look at Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney."
The comment followed a report by fellow Mail journalist Katie Hind, who revealed what she described as an "explosive feud" between Shearer and his boss at Match of the Day, amid claims of a mutiny behind the scenes at the show. Shearer is reported to have scaled back his contractual commitments, cutting his appearances to around one show a month.
New pundits held back for later broadcasts
The BBC had advertised its new line-up for the season in the preceding week, telling viewers to expect to see Thomas Frank, Toby Alderweireld, Robbie Keane and Ashley Young on the programme, alongside four new shows launching on YouTube aimed at younger audiences. None of the new faces featured in the opening broadcast, with the BBC instead sticking with the presenters and pundits it already knew, including Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan, who succeeded Gary Lineker as the show's main hosts.
Frank, who managed Brentford before taking charge at Tottenham Hotspur, is set to become a regular addition to the panel. Gill's review described him as a fine, modern and intelligent coach who impressed during the BBC's coverage of the 2026 World Cup, much of which was broadcast from Salford. Alderweireld, a former Tottenham and Belgium defender, and Keane, the ex-Tottenham and Republic of Ireland striker, are also joining the rotating cast of pundits. Gill suggested their views on Tottenham would likely generate separate stories online, particularly if controversial.
Rooney's 'schoolboy' criticism of United
Rooney used Saturday's coverage to criticise Manchester United's defending as "schoolboy", a remark Gill said would have tempted news editors to commission separate copy on its own.
Concerns about how the expanded and rotating cast of pundits will gel together are reported to form part of the unrest at the show, in contrast with the camaraderie built up between Shearer, Micah Richards and Lineker during their years working together.
Football Focus ended after 52 years
The scrutiny over Match of the Day's direction comes months after Football Focus, its BBC sister programme, ended in May after 52 years on air.
The season-opening edition of Match of the Day featured coverage of Hull City's win on their return to the Premier League, along with the rest of the weekend's Premier League highlights.
