The XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo are on course for record attendance, the head of the organizing body said Friday.
Luis Mejía Oviedo, president of Centro Caribe Sports, said public demand had already exceeded expectations and that strong interest in remaining events pointed toward record participation figures for this edition.
Oviedo said he did not yet have official attendance numbers but was confident the final totals would surpass the organization’s initial projections. He added that the games had been developing without difficulty and praised the support of fans at venues across Santo Domingo.
The competition has entered its decisive phase, with medals being decided across several disciplines and crowds growing at sporting venues throughout the city.
A centennial milestone
Known as the Centennial Games, the event traces its origins to Mexico in 1926. It runs until August 8 and brings together around 6,200 athletes competing in 40 sports and 53 disciplines.
The Dominican Republic is hosting the Central American and Caribbean Games for the third time, after editions in Santo Domingo in 1974 and Santiago in 1986.
