Chelsea recovered from a two-goal deficit to defeat Leeds 6-3 in a chaotic Carabao Cup tie at Stamford Bridge, sparked by a quadruple half-time substitution from manager Xabi Alonso that turned the match on its head.
Cole Palmer scored twice and Danny Welbeck added two of his own as the Premier League club struck four times in a blistering 12-minute spell in the second half. Morgan Rogers provided four assists to complete a turnaround that spared Chelsea from an embarrassing early exit against their English Football League opponents.
Early rounds of the League Cup frequently serve as a test of depth for top-flight squads, and Alonso's heavily rotated side struggled to match the intensity of the visitors. Leeds had dominated the first half and took a deserved lead through Tarik Muharemovic. Despite Alonso introducing his star players at the interval, the visitors extended their advantage when Brenden Aaronson swept in a second goal, leaving Chelsea staring at a surprise defeat.
Leeds dominance in early exchanges
Alonso made nine changes to his starting line-up for the cup tie, presenting an opportunity for his fringe players and youth prospects. The Chelsea manager handed a start to goalkeeper Mike Penders, while Acheampong, Lacroix and Levi Colwill formed the defence. Estevao and Gittens were deployed in attack alongside Welbeck.
Also among the starters was 16-year-old midfielder Reggie Watson, who signed from Crystal Palace two years ago. Watson, the son of former Wigan Athletic midfielder and FA Cup final goalscorer Ben Watson, became the fourth-youngest player in Chelsea's history. His debut was marked by a yellow card, the only booking of the match for either side.
"We have all been Reggie Watson one day, hopefully he will enjoy it," Alonso said before kick-off. However, the youthful Chelsea side found little to enjoy in the opening 45 minutes as Leeds started with a fierce tempo.
The visitors, managed by Daniel Farke, snapped into tackles and displayed a competitive edge that the lightweight home team lacked. Leeds consistently threatened from set pieces, including long throws from former Chelsea player Ethan Ampadu, and their pressure eventually yielded an opening goal.
Following a fine double save by Penders to deny Aaronson and Muharemovic, Harry Wilson swung a deep corner into the penalty area. Muharemovic rose highest at the far post to head in his first goal for Leeds.
The Bosnia international joined Leeds for £34 million from Italian club Sassuolo. Before his move to England, the defender was perhaps best known for being on the receiving end of a lunge by United States striker Folarin Balogun, which resulted in a red card and a diplomatic skirmish during a World Cup summer match.
Half-time changes for Chelsea
Leeds reached the break with a 1-0 advantage but were left to regret not translating their dominance into a larger lead. In response to his team's struggles, Alonso took ruthless action at half-time, bringing on Palmer, Rogers, Pedro Neto and Reece James in place of Gittens, Malo Gusto, Estevao and Watson.
"I need to take the blame," Alonso said regarding his initial team selection. "When you don't have time to work it's difficult to compete at this level. I will have a deeper assessment about how to help my players have a bigger impact. Maybe I made it too difficult against a strong side. But you need to react and make decisions."
Despite the introduction of the heavyweights, Chelsea quickly found themselves further behind. Valentin Barco was easily dispossessed on a counter-attack, allowing Ampadu to deliver a low cross that Aaronson swept past Penders to double the Leeds lead.
Four Chelsea goals in 12 minutes
The momentum of the tie shifted completely on a controversial refereeing decision by Jarred Gillett. The match official awarded Chelsea a penalty after Pep Chavarria went down under minimal contact from Dan James. Palmer stepped up and coolly rolled the spot-kick into the net to give the hosts a lifeline.
Just two minutes later, Palmer scored again to bring Chelsea level. The England international curled a sublime left-footed finish low into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.
The equaliser supercharged the home supporters, who had been numbed into silence during the first half, and Leeds promptly collapsed under the pressure. Neto produced a near-identical copy of Palmer's second goal to put Chelsea ahead, before Welbeck added a fourth. The burst of four goals arrived in just 12 sizzling minutes, with Rogers setting up three of them.
Manager reactions to chaotic encounter
Farke expressed his frustration at the penalty decision that initiated Chelsea's comeback. "A crazy, nuts game," the Leeds boss said. "We played with confidence, not even a chance for them, then the referee decided to give a penalty. No one in the stadium was asking for it."
"All of a sudden, quality players and the momentum was on their side. One small situation can change the whole momentum of the game," he added.
Although Chelsea had taken control, their defensive frailties remained apparent. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, introduced as a substitute for Nmecha, pulled a goal back for Leeds to make it 4-3. The goal highlighted an ongoing issue for Alonso's side, who have conceded 10 goals in their first five matches of the season while scoring 16 at the other end.
Barco eased the lingering tension by scoring Chelsea's fifth goal, averting an anxious finale. It was the fourth goal of the evening created by Rogers, who made a point of noting his own contribution as Palmer collected the man of the match award. "I had four assists and he scored a penalty," Rogers said.
Welbeck then sealed the emphatic 6-3 victory in added time, deflecting a mishit shot from Barco past hapless Leeds goalkeeper Michael Zetterer to secure Chelsea's place in the fourth round.
Chelsea will host Hull City in their next fixture. Hull have scored four goals and conceded two across their first five games of the campaign.
