SV Darmstadt 98 suffered a 1-0 defeat away against Dynamo Dresden in the 2. Bundesliga on Sunday after an early goal from Jonas Sterner.

The result leaves Darmstadt winless after two matches with only a single point from their opening fixtures, as manager Florian Kohfeldt criticised midfielder Kai Klefisch for a sending-off that left his side struggling.

Dynamo Dresden took the lead in the 12th minute when Sterner converted the home team's very first chance of the match. For long periods following the opening goal, neither team produced much action inside the penalty areas.

After the match, Kohfeldt admitted that the victory for the Saxon hosts was deserved, an assessment shared by Darmstadt goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen. However, Kohfeldt claimed that Dresden had only created two scoring opportunities. In reality, the hosts had six chances throughout the game, whereas Darmstadt remained alarmingly harmless in attack and managed only a single dangerous moment through new signing Milan Smit. Kohfeldt noted that anyone watching the match on television likely found little entertainment value in the performance.

Coach criticism of Klefisch red card

Darmstadt's hopes of a comeback were severely damaged roughly 20 minutes before the end of the match when Klefisch received a yellow-red card. His manager expressed strong frustration over both bookings for different reasons.

Kohfeldt said the first booking for dissent was completely justified, stating that Klefisch needed to keep his mouth shut and calling his complaint simply stupid.

In contrast, Kohfeldt argued that the second yellow card was not justified, asserting that Klefisch had not actually made contact with his opponent below and had only played the ball. Television replays, however, cast doubt on the manager's view, showing that Klefisch had also grabbed the opponent's upper body.

Schuhen analysed after the match that the red card had effectively pulled the plug on Darmstadt's remaining momentum. The introduction of substitute Ho-jae Lee, who had previously initiated a comeback in a 2-2 home draw against Holstein Kiel, failed to alter the outcome in Dresden.

Squad overhaul and missing attacking flow

Darmstadt fielded a heavily overhauled squad for the encounter, featuring six summer signings in the starting lineup and three more entering as substitutes. The team struggled to generate fluency, with attacking threat virtually non-existent following the summer departures of key forward players Fraser Hornby, Isac Lidberg, and Kilian Corredor.

Addressing the team's offensive difficulties, Kohfeldt explained that the club knew before the season began that re-developing automatic tactical routines in the final third would take time. He added that the squad would certainly not panic over the sluggish start, expressing confidence that performance levels would improve as the team bonds.

Upcoming cup fixture in Jena

Darmstadt will have an immediate opportunity to refine their tactical cohesion on Sunday when they enter the first round of the DFB-Pokal. The team travels away to face fourth-tier Regionalliga side Carl Zeiss Jena at 15:30.
