Russian sports commentator Dmitry Guberniev has shared memories of the 1990s, including his involvement in gang showdowns, according to Championat.
Guberniev said he participated in three such incidents. He recalled being handed a large object and told to run and fight, which made him think he needed to get away from the situation.
Life in the 1990s
The commentator said Russians at the time could imagine themselves living in another country. Guberniev explained that while people talk about a lack of food during that era, products were available because the market had arrived. He said the real shortages occurred in the 1980s and until 1992, but food appeared when prices were deregulated.
When asked if he could have left Russia during that period, the sports journalist said no. Guberniev added that while anything seemed possible in the new Russia, it was impossible for him to imagine being abroad in 1990.
Guberniev previously expressed concerns about the potential lifting of sanctions against Russian athletes. He said practical difficulties would arise, adding that people should not expect hockey players, football players and biathletes to be instantly readmitted to competitions all at once.
