Twitch streamer Dr DisRespect, real name Guy Beahm, was forced to end a broadcast while playing Call of Duty after telling his audience that someone had fired a real gun at his house. Best known for playing PUBG, or PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Beahm took off his wig and sunglasses, broke character and left the stream after the attempted shooting, only to return moments later to say it was the second time in a week this had happened.
He is seen leaving his station after hearing a noise and said that 'someone shot at our house. Broke the f***ing upstairs window. This is the second show. Someone shot yesterday at our f***ing house.'
Who is Dr DisRespect?
Dr DisRespect is the Twitch handle of Guy Beahm, known for his high-quality streams of PUBG and H1Z1 as well as his arrogant and boisterous character, according to Know Your Meme. He is also a former community manager for Sledgehammer Games and a multiplayer level designer for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
After creating the persona in 2010, Beahm launched a YouTube channel and uploaded his first video, which showed gameplay of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Dr DisRespect was also featured in a number of videos for the gaming channel Machinima, on which he mostly played Call of Duty. However, after YouTuber DavidSilverberg posted a video about the character that went on to gain more than 380,000 views, Beahm stopped uploading and was inactive on the site from 2011 for five years.
In 2016, Beahm created the Twitch channel Dr DisRespectLIVE and gained popularity for playing battle royale games. He became known for being cocky, referring to himself as 'an award winning international champion in the online gaming community,' and calling his subscribers members of 'The Slick Daddy Club.' Over a year after joining Twitch, his channel had more than 1.2 million followers. He was voted Streamer of the Year and won Trending Gamer in 2017.
Beahm's satirical song, Gillette (The Best A Man Can Get), achieved more than 434,000 plays and 8,700 likes on Soundcloud. His subreddit has more than 18,800 subscribers, his Facebook page has more than 32,000 followers, and his Twitter following stands at 734,000.
In 2018, a video of him talking to a fan who said he was contemplating suicide was posted on YouTube and gained more than 500,000 views before being reposted to Reddit's r/videos, where it received more than 40,000 upvotes. He was later profiled by ESPN, which described him as 'a WWE character in the competitive gaming world' and noted his black wig, sunglasses, oversized mustache and 6-foot-8-inch height.
Beahm said: 'I created a character who plays multiplayer video games, and he's considered the most dominating gaming specimen.' He explained that the character had been around longer than many expect, and that it started with a voice and a gamertag. 'I decided to change my gamertag from "Diarrhea Panic." The Doctor character originated from playing Halo 2 on the Xbox and it had proximity chat where you could engage with someone in real-time on the microphone, and I loved that; I ate that up.'
After creating the Dr DisRespect gamertag, he worked with cameramen and music to produce content, then moved to Washington to work on World of Tanks, where he met a Boom.TV investor who worked out a deal for him to become a consultant. 'They funded my studio, rent and broke down the revenue made from streaming,' Beahm said. 'It came down to my wife, and she said to try to stream and see where it went.' In 2017, Dr DisRespect pulled in 25,000 to 30,000 viewers, streaming in character Monday to Friday for six to eight hours a day.
Asked whether the character was sustainable, Beahm said: 'I think about it all the time, about how to extend the shelf life, and you have to think outside of the box. A lot of it is determined with what games come out, and you play off the entertainment ideas that will organically surface. I don't know if I want to do Twitch forever because I'm not in my 20s, but we'll see.'
A month after that interview was published, Beahm streamed a two-minute segment in which he revealed he had been 'unfaithful' to his wife and said he would 'take time off to focus on my family.' After less than two months off, Dr DisRespect returned to Twitch, informing followers of his comeback in February 2018 in a tweet that gained more than 15,000 likes and 3,000 retweets within 24 hours.
Upon his return, according to Dexerto, he addressed the infidelity and said he and his wife were going through a rebuilding process. 'It's a learning process, it's a rebuilding process, it's a strengthening process,' he said. 'We're starting to understand some things, we're starting that rebuilding process.'
What happened to Dr DisRespect?
Just months after his return to Twitch, Dr DisRespect was forced to end a broadcast after his house was shot at, as reported by CNet. On the stream, he was heard saying: 'I gotta end the broadcast right now. Someone shot at our house, broke the fucking upstairs window.'
No one was hurt in the suspected attack. A local sheriff's department confirmed that a person matching Beahm's description had called to report the shot, the second report of the same kind in two days.
Dr DisRespect tweeted after the event: 'The Doc and family appreciate everyone's concerns and well wishes. Thankfully no one was hurt. The situation is being handled appropriately. In the meantime, stream will resume tomorrow according to schedule.#FirmHandshakes.'
