FC Barcelona faces backlash over Elche flag statement

FC Barcelona has sparked widespread controversy after issuing an official statement condemning police for arresting a fan and confiscating Catalan independence flags in Elche.

The incident occurred outside the Martinez Valero stadium ahead of Barcelona's La Liga match against Elche CF.

In its public statement, FC Barcelona criticized what it called a disproportionate use of force against its members and supporters. The Spanish football club claimed the arrest procedure for one fan was excessive and lacked necessary consistency and appropriateness in the use of force.

The club confirmed it had contacted the arrested supporter and their family to offer full assistance. It also criticized police officers for confiscating estelada flags, describing the star-patterned Catalan independence emblem as a legal symbol protected under freedom of expression that does not constitute incitement to hatred or violence.

Government investigation into police response

Barcelona demanded a formal explanation from authorities and warned that it reserves the right to take legal or administrative action to protect the rights and freedom of expression of its members at both Spotify Camp Nou and away stadiums.

The club's statement prompted an immediate political reaction from Catalan pro-independence parties. Under pressure from government allies, Spain's interior minister ordered an investigation into the police officers involved in the charge against Barcelona fans outside the stadium.

The estelada is an unofficial flag commonly flown by Catalan independence supporters, distinguishing itself from the official Senyera flag of Catalonia. Elche is located in the province of Alicante, within Spain's eastern Valencian Community. FC Barcelona, based at the Spotify Camp Nou in Barcelona, has long maintained strong links to Catalan regional identity.

Social media criticism over flag policies

The club's stance triggered immediate criticism on social media platforms, where users accused Barcelona of hypocrisy regarding flag restrictions and fan symbols.

Commentators on X pointed out that FC Barcelona has previously removed Spanish national flags from its own stadium, including an incident where a Spanish flag featuring an Atletico de Madrid crest was taken down under the explanation that it obstructed commercial advertising.

Supporters also recalled that Barcelona previously enforced stadium bans against rival fans, prohibiting Espanyol supporters from entering Camp Nou while wearing team shirts or carrying club symbols.

Social media users questioned why the club considered an opponent team's badge to be an incitement to hatred while defending political flags at away grounds. Others criticized the club for complaining about police actions while tolerating chants directed against Spain, arguing that the club should focus on sport rather than politics while competing in Spanish national competitions.
