Filip Hrgovic stopped Moses Itauma in the ninth round at The O2 in London to claim the vacant IBF heavyweight title on Saturday.
The 21-year-old British prospect suffered the first defeat of his professional career after exhausting himself in the second half of the contest. Victory for Hrgovic makes him Croatia's first-ever world heavyweight champion and reshapes the division's title picture.
Itauma started the bout at a ferocious pace, intent on securing an early victory. Inside the opening minute of the first round, a powerful right hook to the temple rocked Hrgovic. Itauma maintained his momentum in the second round, landing a sharp left hook that forced the Croatian to steady himself with a glove on the canvas.
The young challenger controlled the scoring throughout the opening six rounds, barely surrendering a minute of action. In the fifth round, Itauma detonated a left uppercut flush on the point of Hrgovic's chin. However, the experienced Croatian absorbed the blow and remained composed despite taking heavy damage.
Turning point in London
Entering the seventh round, Itauma was taken beyond six rounds for the first time in his professional career. Promoted by Frank Warren, who had said before the fight that winning a world title would earn the youngster sporting icon status, Itauma was also bidding to become Britain's second-youngest world champion.
The bout took place at The O2 Arena in London, a primary venue for major British boxing events. The International Boxing Federation, established in 1983, is one of the four major sanctioning bodies that govern world championship boxing alongside the WBA, WBC, and WBO.
Despite winning every round heading into the second half of the fight, the physical toll of attempting to stop the durable Croatian exhausted the younger boxer. Sensing his chance in the eighth round, Itauma emptied his tank in a sustained assault. Hrgovic stood firm, leaving the challenger almost completely spent.
Ninth-round stoppage and post-fight reaction
Within a minute of the ninth round, Itauma was out on his feet and unable to stay steady as Hrgovic pressed forward. With his fighter defenceless, Itauma's corner threw in the towel to halt the contest. Medical staff attended to Itauma in his corner immediately after the stoppage.
After securing the defining win of his career, Hrgovic questioned the challenger's durability strategy. "Let me ask my young friend something," Hrgovic said. "Is a chin important?"
The new champion also offered praise for Itauma's abilities while highlighting the decisive factor of endurance. "He's an amazing fighter. He's the best I've been in the ring with," Hrgovic added. "He gassed out and he needs more experience but he is one of a kind."
The victory rewards Hrgovic's resilience and experience after taking severe punishment early in the bout, bringing the IBF belt to Croatia. For Itauma, a first professional loss serves as a lesson in pace and stamina management following a series of swift early-round victories in his career.
