Spartak Abascal head coach came to the Memorial Cup opener on October 20

Moscow CoachSpartacus » Guillermo Abascal came to the opening of a friendly football tournament in honor of the memory of the fans who died in a stampede in October 1982, in a welcome speech calling the Red-White supporters the best in Russia.

The UEFA Cup match between Spartak Moscow and Dutch Harlem at Luzhniki on October 20, 1982 turned tragic. According to official figures, 66 fans died in a stampede on the icy steps of Grandstand C, including 45 aged between 14 and 19. Spartak fans play in a friendly tournament taking place in Sokolniki, and Moscow club employees and members of the coaching staff, physical preparation coaches Alexander Zaichenko and Perez Lopez, will also take part in the competition.

– As soon as I arrived in Russia, I realized that Spartak is much more than anyone from the outside can imagine. It is a great honor for me to be with you and our coaching staff, who will be playing here. Unfortunately, tomorrow I won’t be able to be with the team on the bench, but I will have time to train today, so don’t worry. Football without fans, as you know, is not football. We have to understand and not forget that we are playing for the fans,” Abascal said during the opening ceremony.

– All of us should feel that feeling – the pride felt when you put on a Spartak t-shirt. Whether it’s a child, a woman, a man, Spartak should be something to be proud of. Spartak fans are the best, and the team, believe me, feels it. You have no idea how nice it is to come to any city in Russia and feel the support of the fans. Thanks a lot. We will continue to give the best of ourselves, to do everything possible to complete this section as well as possible before the winter break.
